My Mitsubishi Colt Version R Journey

Haha... a friend "scolded" me for having such unfair treatment as compared to my Colt Version R(CVR) vs my Jetta.  Too bad, during that time, I wasn't really prepared to "blog it".  Nevertheless, here's all that I have in terms of pictures.

I remembered it was 5 Jan 2009 when I went down to Pandan Garden Cycle & Carriage alone to pick up this car.
Stock Engine Bay

For me, it seems quite difficult to keep my car in total "stock" condition.  So here's some mod that I have done during the 21 months of ownership.

Well, this is my firest "mod" for the CVR... wahaha

Next, I took the CVR out for her first photoshoot along 40 tiang...
Close up view on the stock rims.

I and quite a fan of ICE.  If you have seen my Jetta pictures, you might have noticed that I can sacrificed my spare tyre just for ICE.

Anyway, I don't think I have any more stock setup pictures and here comes the "modded pics".

Pioneer AVH-P4150DVD with DEQ-P7650 Processor and CD-BTB200 Bluetooth Adapter.

My custom boot setup, with Kicker 300.4 to power up the front speakers while a Kicker 400.1 to power up a 10" Kicker Solo-Baric.
Front stage - Focal speakers with a nicely fitted tweeter pod.
Other than ICE, my mod list will include brakes, handling and performance.  Having used a set of AP Racing brakes on my Peugeot 206cc, I would wish to have another set of AP installed on my CVR.  However, due to budget constraints and also needed to leave my car for a week at the workshop, I decided to opt for other bolt on kit instead.

Then I found a set of 2nd hand ATS mini 6 pot 283mm cross drilled slotted rotors that fit the car.  Furthermore, the red painted calipers fits my RED CVR very much... however, the stock rims could not clear the brakes and hence had to get a new set of wheels.  Feeling that a silver rims looks kinda bored, I decided to resprayed it immediately when I get the set of new rims.  Here's the look...

I remembered Ralliart Pit approached me to help them advertise on Carbuyer and thereafter I took the opportunity and ask them for some better Ralliart deals from them.

Frankly, I am also a great fan of Ralliart, hence most of my mods are very Ralliart biased.

Here's some of my Ralliart Parts.

Ralliart Engine Oil Cap Cover.

Ralliart Rear View Mirror Cover.
"LTA Friendly" Ralliart Exhaust.
Ralliart Intake Pipings and Intercooler Pipings.
Ralliart Grounding Cables.
Ralliart Suspension (Shocks and Springs) with Cusco anti roll bar (Rear).
Cusco Front Anti Roll Bar.

I am also a fan of Recaro seats and finally got a change to fit this EVO X Recaro onto my CVR.  Never regret having them installed.

Bolt on railings.
Passenger Seat

If you have noticed earlier, I was using a 2-Din Pioneer Head Unit.  In order to keep my Ralliart triple meter, I managed to source for a OEM hood and center tray to fit it.
not forgetting hooks to hang my clothes.

I simply love the psst psst sound of HKS SSQV.  So since its a turbocharge CVR, its a must have for me!

I wonder why the car came with some funny matching interior colour.  So I decided to take those panel out and respray them RED!

Driver's console
Passender side window console.
Gearbox console.
Overall Look.
Finally, a BMC CDA filter taken off my ex Peugeot 206cc.
and at the same time, my good friend customised and "air diverter" for me.

Also tested the throttle controller by Blitz.

To keep the ATF temperature cooler, I decided to install a large ATF cooler taken off a Mazda CX7 (I think).  Here's some pics.
Just before the ATF Cooler is installed.

After installation.

Joining in the "fun" is the engine oil cooler.

and at the same time, "upgraded" the horn...

Signing off, recommend one free modification to increase the boost of CVR.  Removed the "pill".  But be careful during removal, this item is very very small!  After removal, my CVR could achieve 1 bar boost!
The final look of my CVR before I hand over to my aunt who took over the car.

I am sure that you'll be with the good hands of my aunt.

  1. how did u get the HKS dump valve to work? the english czt owners club are arguing with me telling me an HKS dump valve will blow my turbo. how long have u had yours on for and dose it work the best?

    ReplyDelete
  2. Not too sure if u r refering to my HKS SSQV BOV. My understanding of the HKS SSQV is that its not reliable in able to hold boost. To me, it sounded the sweetest and possibly the most irritating as well. I had it working since installation till I dekit and sold my car to someone else.

For a turbo to "blow", I would probably think the installation was incorrect. Thus, instead of ventilating the air out, the stopper was connected in place of it, thus causing the excessive pressure to go direct back to the turbo fins instead.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Ya I have the same bov but wat way did u put it on.

    ReplyDelete
  4. With reference to the original dump valve orientation, install the "stopper" along the air intake side, and connect the bov along the intercooler end. hope that helps. :)

    ReplyDelete
  5. Ya thats wat I did and car went n to limp mode has this happend to you at any point.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Limp mode has a lot of possibilities. Although I don't rule out the possibility caused by the BOV, I did not encounter during my entire ownership.

Limp mode could be due to a lot of reasons, were u on any aftermarket ecu piggyback? How high is your turbo boost (mine is at 1.1 bar)? Were you able to to verify if the sensors (eg air flow sensors, O2 sensors etc) are in working condition? What about your injectors, fuel pumps etc?

If all else fails, install back the original dump valve and try again. If the fault still occurs, then the problem lies in the HKS BOV. Btw, are you driving a CVT or manual (mine CVT)? I heard the manual gearbox will get CEL after installing BOV (except for a particular brand which I couldn't remember at this point of time).

    ReplyDelete
  7. ya mines boostn 1.1 aswell.Everything is fine on her it was when I put the Hks bov on it went in to limp mode and its manual.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Ahhh, that explains... Manual GB will cause the car to have Check Engine Lamp lit up and goes into limp mode.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Is there anyway round it.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I think for manual, you can try using Blitz, Perrin or TurboSmart. See if any of your friends have these BOVs and let u try out.

Hope it works and start "psst, psst" soon.

    cheers

  11. hello i'm colt ralliart (euro version with baby evo face) owner too. i'm looking for the ssqv bov. do you have installed the 71004-am012? and the bov is in recirculation or just open? thanks for your help.
    regards.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Hi, if i m not mistaken, mine was just the "universal" type and not model specific. It's not recirculation but to atmosphere.

    :)

  13. hello! where did you purchase the OEM hood for the triple rallliart meter?

  14. I bought it from Ralliart Pit, Cycle & Carriage , Singapore

  17. Hi Ivan, fellow SG red CVT CVR owner here. I would like to ask more about removing the pill. Would it have any adverse effect on our CVT transmission with double the original boost? Any modifications done by you to lessen the impact?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Hi TSkyfe, I did not do anything more than installing an ATF oil cooler on the gearbox. Thereafter I use a manual boost controller with unichip. The original solenoid that control the boost where the pill is was bypass after installing the manual boost controller.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Thanks for the info Ivan.

Modding the CVR is still very new to me. Still hesitating whether to go ahead or leave it stock. I am more into increasing performance while keeping the outlook stock. Perhaps might explore into installing an ATF oil cooler followed by boost controller as you have suggested.

    Cheers

  20. It all depends on what u really want.

Well, mine is not the most powerful cvr. I m just aiming for 200bhp and I had achieved close to it.

U can also find more information abt cvr from www.ctfsg.info

    Cheers.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Yup, I guess I am aiming for about 200 horses the most. Not trying to the the fastest or anything. Just want a little more power while still having the reliability.

I tried registering to that forum a couple of times. But they have stricter rules than other forums and I cant seem to find the time and chance to properly "authenticate" myself. Well I am not in any rush so I guess I will just take it easy for now.

    Cheers.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Ic, there were a few incident that led to such measures by the admin. Well, let me know what I could help u here if u want.

    (",)

    ReplyDelete
  23. Cheers Ivan.

Yup, I have been around Swift, RX8, VW forums. The CVR forum is one of the strictest around. But I do respect their rules, so no complaints I guess.

Yah. If it is not too much to ask, can you let me know what brands and models of modification you used to achieve your 200 horses? You can email me if you wish psionix@hotmail.com

I am patronizing at GarageR as my workwhop, will probably seek their help as well. As I mentioned, I am pretty new to this.

    Thanks for everything :)

    ReplyDelete
  24. Nothing much to hide. To achieve 200bhp, I did the following.
    1. BMC CDA air filter.
    2. Unichip
    3. Perrin manual boost controller
    4. Walbro fuel pump.
    5. Ralliart exhaust
    6. Ralliart intercooler piping and radiator pipings (not too sure if that helps)

That shd be about all. Did a dyno and managed abt 192 bhp (if I m not mistaken) on 95 octane fuel. Was told to use 98 instead and may give me the extra 1-2 bhp after tuning.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Just found my dyno chart. It's 196bhp...

    ReplyDelete
  26. I see. Thanks. I went to the Ralliart Pit website to check out. Am abit of Ralliart fan myself :P
But yah Ralliart downsized in 2010 and the SG Ralliart Pit seems to no longer sell anymore Ralliart parts for the CVR except for the muffler. Sadded. Wanted to start off my changing everything to Ralliart parts :(

In order to improve on reliability for the 200 horses, you also installed a CX7 ATF cooler and upgrade your engine oil cooler right?

Which workshop did you go for these mods? And I really like the custom red panels! You DIY or also asked someone to do it for you?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Ya, i m a fan of Ralliart too. that's y if Ralliart has the item, it should/will be on the CVR. That's y i opt for the Exhaust. initially i had the ralliart sports filter, but eventually changed to the BMC instead, as the rubber seal of the sports filter starts to soften. Ralliart Pit was in a way "forced" to close down due to the main Ralliart Japan decided to stop its production. so if u want the exhaust, better get it quick! too bad my pipings are all sold, as it was kept in my storeroom for a few months after i got my jetta.

for cooling wise, i had installed the ralliart sports thermostat on top of the 2 oil coolers.

The workshop i go (espace) does not specialise in CVRs. Garage R has more experience in terms of CVRs but i only got a few items from them, like the Ralliart suspension bushing for the shocks.

As for the red panels, I just went to a professional spray paint shop and get it done. DIY won't be so "kilat". u can spray the main console, the console below, window switches area all together... should be in a region of $50.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Cool!

I probably will write in to SG Ralliart Pit to ask them what items they have left besides the muffler and perhaps book a timing for installation.

Can pass me the place of the spray paint shop? It looks very good. I will only need to spray the transmission tunnel panels and the windows switch panels which for some reason comes in silver.

The more hard core stuffs I will leave it to Garage R to recommend me then :)

  33. Thanks Ivan,

Got hold of the last Ralliart Muffler.
They no longer have the Ralliart pipes so I will go with Carbing.

Btw, noob question. What can did you do with your old stock parts after the modification?

    ReplyDelete
  34. 2 ways in doing it... one is keep in the storeroom and hopefully when u dekit that time can exchange and then sell ur Carbing.

2nd option is just throw it away and see the Carbing together with your car.

I prefer 2nd option as I find it difficult to sell mod items.. hated the negotiation over that few dollars with others.

    ReplyDelete
  35. TSkyfe: have u installed carbing pipings? Someone selling the Ralliart pipings.

  45. Evening Ivan,

I was looking through RColt.com forum and learned that if I wish to change rims which flush my rear fenders, I should look for an offset of about +35.

Therefore I am currently planning to get the SSR Type C 16x7.0J bronze.

    http://www.ssr-wheels.com/wheels/wheelchart.asp?id=2&size_id=2&keepThis=true&TB_iframe=true&height=500&width=700

It seems to only come with +30 or +42. So I guess I need to get +30?

Do you have any expertise in this field?

    Cheers
    TSkyfe

    ReplyDelete
  46. Sorry leh, no more CVR liao... a bit tough to see or test rims that can make it flush with fender...

    pai seh...

    ReplyDelete
  47. No worries. Just asking before I take the plunge :)

    ReplyDelete
  48. I suggest you talk to tyre shop experts. they can one look advice you what offset to use. I recommend South East Tyres. One look only they can tell me which offset will flush with the fenders.

    ReplyDelete
  49. hi.. may i ask do you have the stock catalytic convertor?

    ReplyDelete
  50. Sorry, I do not remove my catalytic converter and also neither do I still hold on to any more CVR parts. :)

    ReplyDelete
  51. bro! do you think ralliart pit still have the centre tray hood for our triple din meter? how much you buy that time? hehehe been looking for that for a super long time.

    ReplyDelete
  52. How does the 'air diverter' works?

    ReplyDelete
  53. Hi Eric, I m not too sure if Ralliart Pit still has or not. hopefully they can help u to order the parts.

As for the "Anonymous" question about "air diverter", in theory, when the car is moving, the "scoop" creates a channel for the wind to flow directly underneath the bonnet and into the area where the air intake is. in that way, (slightly) more air can be sucked in by the air intake. not too sure how much gain it does... and this is also a DIY product from a good friend of mine. :)

    ReplyDelete
  54. I email them le. They no longer carry in stock. Sian 1/2. Hahaha. Btw, wats the pill that u've taken out to boost ur turbo to 1 bar? I use to have boost controller, but taken out. Now miss the 1 bar boost le. If taking the pill can hit 1 bar w/o installing ebc, i want leh. Where u do it?

    ReplyDelete
  55. Ever since Ralliart decided to close shop, Ralliart Pit is unable to get most parts liao. U may still be able to ask them to see if they can bring it in for u, since that parts is not Ralliart parts but rather just another Mitsubishi parts. but u will need to order the center tray as well. Alternatively, u can try stocklist like min ghee (hope i got the spelling correct) to see if they can assist.

As for the "pill", i removed it myself. Tools use were thick needle, safety pin etc. a clean concrete floor on the car park will be good, cos I have dropped it before and luckily managed to find it back. Maybe masking tape may help to prevent it from dropping as well...

    :)

    ReplyDelete
  56. ok.. where is the pill? can help? hahaha maybe i meet you, than you help me with it? hehehe. on the turbo ah?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I didn't take the pics that show where the "pill" is. its located near the BOV whereby there is a solenoid. its a very short U rubber hose (the left side one located inside). got to dig it out one.

      Delete
  57. Hi Ivan,

So by removing the pill alone you can achieve 1 bar boost without using a boost controller? If achieved one bar boost do I need to change anything else to keep the car stable? My CVR is totally stock man...

    Thanks for your advice ya.

    1. Hi Shane, I just remove the pill and the original Ralliart triple registered a boost of 1 bar liao. My car then also stock. U can give it a try but be careful cos the pill is very tiny and tend to loose when it drop out. I suggest u try taking out in mscp or anywhere with cement flooring. So, if the pill drop, u still can find it.

      Delete
    2. Hi Ivan,

      Appreciate your reply.

Did u actually felt the difference in aceleration/speed when boost to 1 bar? Am asking because some say removing the pill only trick the meters to boost at 1 bar while the engine ECU is smart enough to offset the boost, hence output power is same.

      Shane

  61. I Ivan, I needed help in rims, this car is very difficult to search sizes...what is the Best option 16" or 17?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I didn't have any issue when I was "shopping" for rims (as compared to my 206cc), short of not able to install the Advan RS (which I always wanted) although the Advan makes rims for the normal colt and colt plus turbo. I installed SSR Type C before but it's not aftermarket brake kit friendly. Thereafter I swap to a 16" SSW.

As for whether u want 16" or 17", the question I have for you is "comfort" or "looks". Other factors to consider too is if u intend to install bigger brake kit. I chose back 16" because the ride comfort for the colt seriously not comfortable. However, I think it doesn't help much with only an extra 5% profile tyres "cushioning". I personally find that for 17" without upgrading brake kits makes the original rotors looks very small. Tyre cost wise between 16" and 17" is not so significant, but 17" tyres may have limited options.

  64. Hi Ivan, I'm looking to rectify boost problems. Does pill removal really work? Any recommended workshop to do this or is diy possible? My ride is knocking when idling too, any suggestions why so? Many thks!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi Daniel, I suspect your boost problem is likely due to an engine problem. Knocking on idling in my opinion is pretty serious. On my current car, I experience intermittent knocking and found that all 4 of my pistons were cracked and engine block also affected.

I strongly suggest you to do a health check on your car. doubt even removing the pill helps in this case.

      Delete
    2. Thanks Ivan. Think I need to bring her for a checkup. What is your current ride? Cracked pistons mean overhaul!? Gosh!

      Delete
    3. My current ride is also written in my blog, it's a VW MK5 Jetta. In a way, replacing of pistons equates to an overhaul, what's more the engine block also kenna. Now, the "new" engine is on its 2nd tank of petrol. Running in period...

      Delete
    4. Nice ride there! Quite a rocket too! Ride is practically brand new!

Would u happen to know of any recommended good car workshops that specialize in trouble-shooting turbo issues, gaskets replacement and drive shaft replacement...?

      Delete
    5. Well, I bought it brand new... Haha.. Love this car, if not for its gearbox and engine problem.

As for a workshop to troubleshoot, my CVR then was mainly maintained by C&C and interval servicing I drop by my usual workshop, Espace. Didn't really have much issue with the CVR thus unable to direct you to a workshop that can help you to trouble. Well, having said that, I do know some of the CVR visit garage R. As I have not serviced any of my cars there thereafter I couldn't comment much.

  66. Wow ivan, i just chanced upon your car. I'm getting posted to Tuas Naval Base soon (currently at Changi Naval Base) and i thought of getting a car to get me to and fro camp since I stay at Tanah Merah. What's the damage like to bring a stock CVR to somewhere close to 200bhp? Drop me a text at 973o8nine89 please! Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  67. It's been more than 5 years since I've sold this car and I'm still very surprise by all the questions posted to me. I shall try to answer your queries based on my limited understanding.

To achieve about 200bhp, if I remember correctly, what I did was purely install a BMC CDA filter taken from my Peugeot 206cc, unichip that completes with a Dyno tune, Ralliart exhaust, higher flow fuel pump and a fuel regulator. I did intend to install a bigger intercooler, but I didn't because I wanna keep the looks "stock" so I didn't. And err I think that's it.

    Hope that helps.

  69. Hey Ivan, a great write up and sharing tons of information here. I might be considering CVR (A) over the (MT). Definitely imo the (MT) really packs the punch and having shiok feeling when gear shifting. Haha. I came from GE6 -> W176 M270 A180 -> W176 M133 A45 -> F10 N55 535i, I would love to own at least of these CVRs before they 'extinct'.
